Jim McDermott’s photographic work has been profoundly influenced by his work in the music industry. "When you spend almost 40 years looking at album covers, videos and publicity shoots, it leaves an imprint,” say’s McDermott. “I’ve been around creative people my entire adult life. Collaborative energy can be very powerful, and I strive to make that energy present in all my photographs. My best images vibrate with that,” he says.
The majority of McDermott’s photographs are in the portraiture and fashion genres, and convey a gritty New York street sensibility. “The people who interest me are those who want be noticed, who create their style with intent and work hard to manifest their dreams,” he says. “Those who reject conformity, who demand to be seen and heard - those are the people I seek to acknowledge and elevate in my photographic work."
McDermott’s work has been featured in the 2022 Bolivian Photo Festival at the Manzana Uno Espacio de Arte with Leica Fotographie International. He was one of nine photographers featured in LFI’s special Q3 launch issue in 2023. His first one man photographic show, “No Cure For Curiosity” was held in Dumbo, Brooklyn at the Larsen Arts Gallery in April 2005.
